Robin Hood

Existen numerosas leyendas sobre el personaje de Robin Hood. Desde la primera mención manuscrita del mítico héroe inglés en Pedro el Labrador de William Langland en 1377, sus aventuras han exaltado la imaginación popular. Ha pasado de ser el sicario sin honor de los primeros relatos medievales al pícaro y benévolo personaje que roba a los ricos para repartir el botín entre los pobres a mediado del siglo XVI. Fue Walter Scott quien popularizó al personaje en su novela Ivanhoe en 1819, en la que estableció una serie de parámetros de lo que sería en adelante Robin Hood: un personaje romántico y justiciero que contribuye a la reincorporación al trono de Inglaterra de Ricardo Corazón de León.Superando la dicotomía de la realidad y de la leyenda, este libro ofrece unas claves que nos ayudan a entender cómo y por qué el célebre héroe inglés ha conseguido sobrevivir a siglos de historia como representante cultural y paradigma internacional del bandido social y símbolo sempiterno de la preocupación y el enojo popular frente a la injusticia.
 
There are many legends wrapped around the figure of Robin Hood. Since this mythical English hero was first mentioned in the manuscript Piers Plowman by William Langland in 1377, his adventures have extolled popular imagination. He has evolved from being the hit man with no honor of the first medieval stories to become the cheeky and benevolent character that robs from the rich to distribute the booty among the poor during the mid 16th century. It was Walter Scott who popularized the character in his novel Ivanhoe in 1819, in which he established a series of parameters of what Robin Hood would be from that moment onwards: a romantic character and a heroic outlaw that helps Richard the Lionheart recover the English throne.Going beyond the dichotomy between reality and legend, this book offers key factors that help us to understand how and why the celebrated English hero has managed to survive centuries of history as a cultural representative and an international paradigm of the social bandit and as an everlasting symbol of popular concern and anger in the face of injustice.
